Dover Day Trip

We decided yesterday morning, spur of the moment, to get out for the day.  The sun was shining, and it was a gorgeous day!  We had been spying the Cliffs of Dover as one of our next spots, so we figured we would go there.  It's about 150 miles from us, which is awesome!  (It's so funny here, people think that is really far.)   When you tell people you drove to Bath, or want to drive to Dover, they look at you like you're mad.  Guess they don't realize that back in the US, that's nothing.  For us, 150 miles is what some people commute to work.)  Anyway, we headed out and the drive was beautiful.  The weather held up for us, with just a few spots of light rain on the way.  Before you even get to Dover, you can smell the salty air, it's wonderful!  Dover has lots to see, and we know we will head back again.  This time, however, our main focus was the cliffs and the sea views.  We stopped for a quick bite as we rolled into town, then headed to the bottom of the cliffs where there is a town called St Margaret-at-Cliffe.  It's a quaint village that spreads up and over the cliffs.  Some of the houses are literally on the cliffside with spectacular views.  The road down the side to the sea was curvy and steep.  We got to the bottom and parked, and there is a beautiful walkway you can take up and down the oceanside.  The waves were massive and the sea was very choppy.

We then drove up the hill where there was a view of the castle there.  We could not get very close, as it was closed.  I definitely plan on visiting the castle on our next trip there.

We then drove to the National Park where the top of the cliffs are.  There is a 2 mile walk you can take to the lighthouse, but it was also closed.  We walked along the ridge for a bit, then turned around and headed back.  The view was great!

After we checked it all out, we headed back down into the town and drove out to the marina.  The marina is huge, and then they have all of the ferry docks where the ferries come in and out from France, etc.  From the marina, you can see the castle atop the hill.

We then headed to Samphire Hoe, a nature preserve that was a great view of sunset! (I kid you not, these are true to color.  The green is so green, and the sunsets are amazing!)
